A Recap of the 11/30 Stop Anti-Abortion Terrorism Vigil

On November 30, Reproaction held a vigil at the United States Supreme Court. Over 100 people gathered to remember the three people murdered and nine others wounded when a gunman targeted a Planned Parenthood health center in Colorado Springs, and to honor all victims and survivors of anti-abortion harassment, violence, and terrorism. We would like to thank everyone who was able to attend the vigil. Special thanks to NARAL Pro-Choice America for partnership, and our speakers Rep. Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IN), Mitchell Stile from NARAL, and Kersha Deibel-Trotter from PPFA.

Vigil #1Every day and all over this country, doctors, clinic staff, patients, and clinic escorts wade through harassment and worse.

vigil #6

1 in 3 women will have abortions, and they are doing nothing wrong.

Abortion is basic healthcare and a basic right.

Women need to be able to control whether and when to have children in order to have dignity and be equal, period.

vigil #7Enough is enough.

Let’s demand an end to abortion terrorism and harassment.

Reproaction Act and Learn Webinar 11/18: How to Talk About Abortion and Survive the Holidays

Are you dreading the holiday season because you know your aunt is going to bring up “those hearings” and you aren’t sure how to respond?

Have you ever left a holiday gathering last year kicking yourself for not responding  when someone said they are pro-choice but oppose people using abortion as birth control?

How we talk about abortion and attacks on access to abortion play crucial roles in our ability to shift from playing defense to actually winning. With honesty and a little humor, we can all enjoy the holidays without having to bite our tongue.  Check out our Act and Learn Webinar:  How to Talk About Abortion and Survive the Holidays from Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

We’d like to thank our guest panelist Steph Herold, Managing Director and Co-Founder of The Sea Change Program.

We hope you enjoy a safe, joyful, and empowered holiday season! Enjoy the webinar below.

Reproaction Act and Learn Webinar: End the #BadLegacy, Obama! It’s Time for Action on Helms

For six years President Obama has failed to extend abortion funding to rape victims in war zones. At this Reproaction Act and Learn webinar, advocates and experts will explain the Helms Amendment and how President Obama’s continued inaction hurts women around the world. We’ll provide a clear answer to this common question: What’s the difference between Helms, Hyde, and the Global Gag Rule? Finally, we’ll share actions you can take to ensure Obama doesn’t leave a #BadLegacy on reproductive rights.

Confirmed guest panelists include:

  • Rev. Harry Knox, President/CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (by advance remarks)
  • Akila Radhakrishnan, Legal Director for the Global Justice Center
  • Beirne Roose-Snyder, Director of Public Policy for the Center for Health and Gender Equity (by advance remarks)

If you support Reproaction’s #BadLegacy campaign, or want to find out what it’s all about, you won’t want to miss this webinar. Check out a Storify of tweets here, and a video recording here:

Where are the “pro-life” investigations on gun violence?

Nine people were killed and nine more were injured yesterday when a shooter took several guns into Umpqua Community College in Oregon and opened fire. Just this year, there have been 39, 530 total firearm incidents and 9, 957 people have been killed. Every victim of gun violence is somebody’s child, and many are parents.

And yet gun violence is not the “pro-life” issue Congress is talking about. Demand your legislators take action on gun violence.

PROLIFE ACTION ON GUNS FB

Gun violence is a reproductive justice issue. Quite simply, no one is able to raise children in safe and healthy communities when there is no policy response to school shootings and mass shootings and church shootings, some explicitly targeting communities of color.

In the wake of yesterday’s tragedy, President Obama has rightfully called our nation to task. “It can not be this easy for somebody who wants to inflict harm on other people to get his or her hands on a gun,” he said. It shouldn’t be. And yet it is.

Tell Congress gun violence is a reproductive justice issue, and it’s long past time it do something about it.

The Pope has arrived. Here’s what Reproaction supporters want him to know!

Pope Francis has arrived in America. During his visit, the Pontiff will address a joint session of the United States Congress and the United Nations. Pope Francis has drawn both praise and criticism for challenging the world to step up and take action on immigration reform, climate change and poverty. But this sometimes progressive Pope has also alarmed many through his dehumanizing comments about transgender people, rejection of LGBT families and women’s ordination, and his support of regressive policies regarding reproductive healthcare and abortion rights.

We invited people to send Pope Francis a message. What would people like Pope Francis to know, wish he would take a stand on, want him to understand or appreciate?

Here’s some of what attendees at Netroots Nation 2015 want Pope Francis to know. You can see more NN15 messages here.

I’m Catholic & pro-choice. Get the Vatican out of my uterus.

I’m Catholic & pro-choice. Get the Vatican out of my uterus.

“Women don’t need forgiveness for what they do with their own bodies.”

Reproaction supporters shared messages through our #HeyPopeFrancis online campaign. We hope you will follow #HeyPopeFrancis on Twitter as we share more messages, and join the conversation.

Pope Francis – please stand with the black lives matter movement in the US and the horrible violence happening to transgender people all over the world. Your advocacy could save lives and show that racial justice and equitable treatment are the true doctrines of The Church.
Alexandra – Bowling Green, Ohio

Erin Matson says it perfectly: “A woman who has had an abortion has done nothing wrong. She doesn’t need to apologize, and she certainly doesn’t need to apologize to a man representing an institution that denies her equality.”
Virginia – Lubbock, Texas

And Erin Matson, Reproaction co-founder and co-director, responded to the Pope’s recent announcement of a limited-time offer just for women who have abortions.

Rather than a call to confession about abortion, it would be far more redemptive for Pope Francis to call for a new dialogue within the Catholic Church about gender equality that would elevate the voices of a diverse group of women—including women who have had abortions, women who aren’t sorry about their abortions, and, oh yeah, women priests. That would represent major progress too.
