Abortion rights are an indivisible part of a true progressive platform
There is no such thing as economic justice without reproductive justice, which is the right to parent, the right not to parent, and the right to raise families in safe and healthy communities. Unfortunately, that’s not what some prominent leaders on the left have been saying lately. Some argue for a “big tent,” or flexibility on abortion.
Abortion rights are an indivisible part of a true progressive platform – progressives stand up for economic opportunity for everyone, universal access to health care, evidence-based science, civil and human rights, and women’s equality. Abortion rights are part of all of these things.
Recently, our co-director Erin led 11 Reproaction activists to confront Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, about a meeting he took with David Daleiden, the founder of the Center for Medical Progress whose deceptive, highly edited sting videos have led to 15 felony charges against the anti-abortion activists who made the videos. The videos also inspired anti-abortion violence, including the November 15th terrorist attack against Planned Parenthood in Colorado Spring.
We hand-delivered a letter outlining our concerns and told Senator Manchin why this was so offensive. Matson asked him to denounce anti-abortion terrorism. He did not.
We will not stand by as Senator Manchin, as well as others on the left – including those who have better voting records on reproductive justice issues – are assisting terrorist actions and throwing abortion under the bus.
