Susan B. Anthony List Must Denounce Criminalization of Abortion

#StopProsecutingAbortion

The Susan B. Anthony List attacks abortion rights from federal to local levels. They hold closed-door and public events with President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and many congressional leaders. They reported an income above $8 million in 2017.

The president of Susan B. Anthony List, Marjorie Dannenfelser, stated early in the 2016 election that anti-abortion activists should “support anyone but Donald Trump.” Later that same year, Trump stated there should be “some form of punishment” for women who have abortions. Dannenfelser released a statement in response stating that “punishment is solely for the abortionist.”

But what about people who give themselves abortions? Throughout the United States, people can face legal punishment and even jail time for self-managing their own abortion. Such a case took place in 2012 in Idaho when Jennie Linn McCormack was arrested for self-managing her own abortion. At that time, Dannenfelser stated the case was “not acceptable” and that women should not be punished for having abortions. Yet, when Reproaction called on the Susan B. Anthony List to demand another woman jailed for self-managing her own abortion be set free, they remained silent. Then in 2018, Slate wrote about the legal and policy pitfalls that criminally punish people for abortion, and Slate reported that Susan B. Anthony List did not respond to their request for comment.

President Trump became the first president to speak at the Susan B. Anthony List’s annual gala in D.C. in 2018. Tickets for the event cost anywhere from $350 to $100,000. We decided to ask pro-life major donors and supporters in attendance where they stood on people being sent to jail for self-managing their own abortion. Their responses are telling.

Susan B. Anthony List has not only switched their position on Donald Trump, they recently sent out an email to supporters with a survey including a question if laws should only punish abortion providers and “not the mothers who seek abortions.”

Sign our petition demanding Susan B. Anthony List take an official stance against women being punished for having abortions and that they release the results of their email survey question to Susan B. Anthony List supporters asking if women should be punished. No one should go to jail for having an abortion.
