Reclaiming Pride

Led by transgender women of color, the Stonewall Riots were sparked by ruthless police harassment of LGBTQ people at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. The uprising at Stonewall marked the beginning of the modern fight for LGBTQ rights in the United States. Activists have long fought to honor the militant origins of Pride, and people are organizing all over the country against the inclusion of law enforcement in festival events and partnerships with controversial corporate sponsors, and to demand accountability for demonstrations of anti-trans hate during recent Pride parades.

We explore why some activists are organizing against corporate sponsorship of Pride events, the involvement of law enforcement agencies that continue to target and harass LGBTQ people, and we’ll hear from activists organizing at the grassroots to reclaim Pride.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • David Thurston, organizer with No Justice No Pride
  • Candace Bond-Theriault, Esq., LL.M., Senior Policy Counsel, Reproductive Health, Rights & Justice and the Democracy Project Director at the National LGBTQ Task Force
