At the center of every authoritarian regime is the end goal of achieving control of the entire populations. Across history, autocrats have viewed curtailing women’s rights, such as the right to reproductive healthcare, as a major milestone towards consolidating power. It’s no coincidence that democratic backsliding is happening alongside limits on bodily autonomy popping up around the U.S. as well as increased conservative propaganda promoting the so-called “traditional family.”
