Hold Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Centers Accountable

Many anti-abortion pregnancy centers advertise free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and counseling. The vast majority of these organizations do not offer comprehensive reproductive health care services. They may use deceptive tactics — including mimicking medical care providers or even abortion providers — to get visitors through their doors with the aim of dissuading them from having abortions.

Whether explicitly or implicitly, anti-abortion pregnancy centers (also called “crisis pregnancy centers,” “pregnancy resource centers,” “fake clinics,” or “anti-abortion centers”) oppose abortion, shame abortion care, or promote alternatives to abortion.

Anti-abortion pregnancy centers have long been the backbone of the anti-abortion movement, operating as its most visible, public-facing arm and outnumbering legitimate abortion and reproductive health care providers. But since the fall of Roe v. Wade, anti-abortion politicians and officials have directed an outsized infusion of taxpayer dollars to these often religiously affiliated organizations, even as they offer an extremely limited menu of anti-abortion ‘services’ at a high cost to the public.

Many of these organizations spread harmful disinformation (such as the unproven and unethical theory of “abortion pill reversal”) and weaponize shame and stigma to steer clients away from medically sound, evidence-based information about their pregnancy options.

Reproaction has been fighting against anti-abortion pregnancy centers since our organization’s launch in 2015. We’ve led bold direct actions to expose anti-abortion pregnancy centers, highlighted questionable finances and unethical practices from specific actors, and equipped activists to take on the anti-abortion pregnancy centers in their communities with resources and support such as informational blogs and webinars, a database of every anti-abortion pregnancy center in the country, and a direct action toolkit.
