Previously, I wrote about our action to hold the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List accountable for the criminalization of abortion at their 2019 gala. The ‘pro-life’ SBA List regularly holds meetings with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence. The level of access that this anti-abortion group has to the White House is concerning as it impacts policy in ways that are hardly ‘pro-life,’ as seen when Trump cut off all federal funding to life-saving fetal tissue research.
And this year is not the first time we took a stand against the Susan B. Anthony Lists’s anti-abortion hate. At their 2018 gala, which featured Trump as a speaker, we asked attendees their thoughts on punishment for abortion. Their responses ranged from “that’s a lie” to “if you’re killing children, perhaps” women should be in jail for abortion. You have to see their comments to believe them.
The morning after their 2019 gala, SBA List held an exclusive breakfast for their largest donors at the Trump International Hotel a few blocks from the White House. After our Stop Prosecuting Abortion protest the night before, we came with a new message in the form of a banner that said “Abortion Bans: ‘Grab ‘Em by the Pussy.’” We also wore our “pro-abortion, pro-family, pro-justice” shirts.
The attendees going into the gala seemed annoyed and uncomfortable with our messaging. Our statement was shocking, for sure, but we were just using a direct quote from Donald Trump – who the anti-abortion movement, including the Susan B. Anthony List openly celebrates – when he admitted in 2005 in now-infamous leaked tapes from Access Hollywood that he sexually assaults women. The president of Susan B. Anthony List, Marjorie Dannenfelser, claims Trump is the “most pro-life president in our nation’s history.”
There is nothing ‘pro-life’ about jailing people for abortion, much less condoning sexual assault, and we won’t stop calling out Susan B. Anthony List’s hypocrisy. We demand an end to abortion bans that criminalize abortion and put pregnant people at risk of harm. Join us in taking action here.
