Stand Up for Abortion! ‘Legal, Safe, and Rare’ Insults Women

Reproaction has watched with dismay as ‘pro-choice allies’ in the political class have struggled and outright failed to stand up for the humanity and dignity of women who have abortions in response to orchestrated attacks on Planned Parenthood and the decimation of abortion rights at the state level.
Yesterday, Hillary Clinton joined this chorus by repeating her trademark statement that abortion should be “legal, safe, and rare.” This insults women.
One in three women in this country have an abortion. These women do nothing wrong, and they are hardly rare. Saying abortion should be rare shames women and robs them of their dignity. Abortion is health care, period.
Abortion apologia on the left is directly linked to the onslaught of laws banning access to abortion in the states. Earlier this year, a conservative lawmaker in Arkansas echoed Clinton during the passage of a needless law restricting the use of medication abortion. “We have said we need to make abortion rare and safe,” said Rep. Charlene Van Fite (R-Van Buren).
‘We’ need to stop saying this. Political allies of abortion rights need to wake up and smell the oat bag: Every time you apologize for abortion, or offer to ‘compromise,’ the opposition doesn’t thank you for your reasonableness. The opposition doesn’t declare a truce and move on to helping women get decent maternal care or affordable child care. They take your concession and grab more.
Reproaction firmly reminds ‘allies’ that we are watching and committed to taking bold action to correct this insulting and losing dynamic. The only people who should apologize for the ‘tone’ of the sting videos are the liars and terrorists who may have broken several laws to produce them, and the lobbyists and legislators who are only too pleased to use their distortions to further reduce access to abortion and other basic forms of reproductive health care.
