Taking Action for Abortion Pills
In late March, Reproaction hosted a Self-Managed Abortion (SMA) Week of Action to take action online and across Washington, DC. SMA with medication abortion is a safe, effective, and normal option for abortion care. We recently published a blog post sharing the reasons why someone might choose to self-manage their abortion – highlighting the facts that SMA is a sometimes-necessary and often private way for people to manage their abortions on their own terms. Attacks on mifepristone, one of two abortion pills used in medication abortion, are skyrocketing, and Reproaction has been dedicated to sharing the vital need for abortion pills. Following the launch of our campaign to protect mifepristone, garnering nearly 2,000 signatures, Reproaction organized the SMA Week of Action to share the World Health Organization protocols for self-managed abortion with pills across DC. Over the course of a week, Reproaction completed 4 read-alouds of the self-managed abortion protocol, shared hundreds of stickers and flyers across the city, and engaged volunteers to send emails to the FDA urging them to protect mifepristone.
Reproaction started the week outside the White House, urging President Trump and his administration to face the facts on abortion pills. We also engaged with nearly 3,000 online viewers to share SMA information alongside creator and activist Becca Rea-Tucker, @TheSweetFeminist on Instagram – emphasizing the need for supporting and destigmatizing self-managed abortion care. Later in the week, Reproaction took action outside the Health and Human Services Department to target RFK Jr. and his anti-science agenda, along with the Supreme Court of the United States to reiterate the popularity of abortion access nationwide. Reproaction finished their read-alouds outside the Capitol Hill Crisis Pregnancy Center, an anti-abortion pregnancy center in DC, sharing information about SMA in an effort to highlight the full spectrum of reproductive care that many anti-abortion pregnancy centers deter patients from accessing.

Reproaction ended the week wheatpasting flyers about the SMA protocol with misoprostol across the George Washington University campus, where students have witnessed a rise in anti-abortion presence throughout the past year by way of campus events and a right-wing student organization resurgence. It is critical to share information about SMA and abortion pills to populations most vulnerable to mis- and disinformation, like students and young people. By engaging volunteers throughout the week, stickering and sharing resources across DC and its local campuses, Reproaction was able to engage new folks in the fight for abortion access and share critical information about medication abortion.

In a landscape of criminalization and abortion bans, self-managed abortion is an essential aspect of medication abortion access, and we all must include it in the fight for reproductive autonomy. For more information about our self-managed abortion campaign, visit our website here.
